Indigo's new SX appeal

S. Muralidhar

TATA Motor's Indigo was meant to be an economically priced, decently-equipped entry-level sedan for small-car owners looking for an upgrade despite the supreme luxury positioning that the car's advertising tries to project.

Now, with increasing competition amongst the various cars in the entry level segment and with the need for offering buyers in this segment truly premium trim options, Tata Motors has launched a new SX series of the Indigo with both petrol and diesel variants.

In addition to the three new metallic colours that the SX series comes in, the other additions and changes to the exterior include a new pair of front fog lamps, a chrome strip on the door rub rails, alloy wheels, electrically-adjustable outside rear-view mirrors, clear-lens-style turn signal lamps and sill valance covers.

The new variants' interiors have also been a given a plush makeover, with features that include leather upholstery for the well-padded seats, manually height-adjustable driver's seat, a new analogue clock and a socket for charging mobile phones.

Taking the luxury index one notch higher, the SX series will also come fitted with a VCD player that is MP3 compatible; there are two headrest-mounted LCD screens.

The interior is offered with a beige colour theme and a new air-conditioner fascia and the rear seat now comes with a centre armrest.

The electronic instrument cluster sports a digital odometer and two trip meters that also offer light intensity control. The new body colours include sequin red, carbon black and arctic silver.

The new GSX petrol variant of the Indigo SX series is priced at Rs 5.67 lakh (ex-showroom, Chennai) and the SX diesel variant at Rs 6.06 lakh.
