Alto’s milestones

For a car of its size, the Maruti Suzuki Alto has set some pretty impressive records. Last year, the Alto was the first car to sell one-lakh units in just 150 days.

Now, as of September this year, as it completed the seventh year of its introduction, the Alto has crossed another milestone with its cumulative sales crossing 7.5 lakh units.

During fiscal 2006-07, the Alto also managed sales of two lakh units in 11 months.

And in October 2006, this Maruti small car recorded its highest-ever monthly sales of 22,294 units. But, the Alto’s impressive numbers did not come in right from the time it was launched in 2000.

The car’s first one-lakh units sale was recorded in 37 months, which is over three years since launch. The next one-lakh was logged (that is, a cumulative two-lakh units) in 12 months. In contrast, the one-lakh units sale between the 5 lakh and 6 lakh cumulative sales milestone was reached in just five months.
