I have narrowed down my choice for a new, small car to the Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo VXi and the Hyundai Santro Xing’s equivalent trim variant. I will be using the car for a daily commute of about 100 km within the city. What is your opinion regarding these two models in terms of parameters such as mileage, comfort, maintenance cost and resale value?

The Zen Estilo and the Santro Xing have a few similarities in terms of design and finish quality. Both of them have a tall-boy stance and a comparable drive feel.

Further, in terms of mileage and maintenance costs, too, the two cars are likely to be neck-and-neck, with the Xing being a bit ahead in the mileage department.

However, there are some key differences between the two when you consider the other parameters such as comfort and resale value.

For one, the Xing has better seats for the driver and front passenger, though the rear bench may be pretty much similar in both cars in terms of seating comfort.

The Xing also has a better, smoother gearbox and the sticky gearbox with a tall shift-stick in the Zen Estilo makes the Suzuki car less comfortable during long drives.

In terms of resale value, the Zen Estilo would be a notch lower than the Santro, because of the general market trend where the car that sells well fetches a better price in the used-car segment.

Overall, we think you should choose the Santro Xing. Incidentally, it is entirely possible that both these cars are currently available with dealer discounts. So, hunt for bargains, even the Santro that has been clocking good numbers could be available with dealer discounts, especially after the introduction of the i10.

I am going to buy my first bike. My priorities are good looks, class-leading power and good fuel-efficiency (at teast 50 kmpl).

I love the looks of the Bajaj Pulsar, but I have been told that Pulsar 150’s mileage is low in the city. The second option that I am considering is the Hero Honda CBZ Xtreme. And the third option in the 150cc segment is the Honda Unicorn. Which one do you suggest that I buy?

Managing to get a mileage of about 50 kmpl in the city from a 150cc bike, with all your other expectations also being met, will be extremely difficult to achieve. This would be the case even for the Hero Honda bikes in this segment. So, if mileage is paramount and the primary consideration while choosing a bike, you will have to step down to the 125cc+ category.

But if you do want to choose from among one of the bikes in the 150cc segment, then maybe one more — Hero Honda Hunk — could be added to the list.

All the four bikes are very closely placed in the fit and finish and refinement departments. In terms of looks and features, which are modern and add novelty to the bike, the Bajaj Pulsar is right there on top. The Hunk is Hero Honda’s attempt at offering a competing product. The Honda Unicorn is a very practical, refined and stylish bike. But the Pulsar still manages to hold on to its USP.

Stepping down to the 125cc+ category, the best options are the Bajaj Discover and the Hero Honda Glamour.
