Muralidhar 1960-70: BMW’s considerable success in racing urges the company management to mull over the need for setting up a separate racing or motorsport division. 1972: BMW Motorsport GmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the parent company, is formed to dedicate research into developing super performance racing machines and street legal cars. It is said that BMW started the new division with less than ten employees. 1972-78: The new company initially focuses on BMW’s racing needs developing high-performance engines. Later, experimental, modified and souped-up versions of BMW’s regular street legal cars are developed and driven by the company’s racecar drivers. 1978: The first of BMW M’s cars for sale to the public is unveiled. The legendary M1 quickly becomes an icon of street legal super performance sports cars. 1980: The M535i, the high performance BMW 5-Series sedan, is launched and sets the tone for the future of M cars. 1981 to date: BMW Motorsport’s name is changed to simply BMW M GmbH. All of BMW’s car models, except the 7-Series and the X3 and X5 sports utility vehicles, have been modified into their respective highly tuned, super performance M versions. Model changes, new engines, etc., take their place to coincide with changes that are made to the regular BMW cars. Later, BMW Individual M cars are launched for the discerning, exclusivity seeking sports car fan. More Stories on : Cars
