The Tamil Nadu Government has announced a Rs 2,000-crore plan to construct 22,000 houses during 2008-09 to meet the housing needs of the low income and middle income households.

According to the policy note for the Housing and Urban Development Department tabled in the Assembly on Friday, the Tamil Nadu Housing Board will be revived to cater to those neglected by the private developers, particularly the economically weaker sections.

The housing projects would be implemented through joint venture and public private partnerships. Over 24 projects in an area of 746 acres would be taken up during the year. The joint venture projects would be taken up in Chennai in the residential localities of K.K. Nagar, Koyambedu and Villivakkam. Land has also been identified for building integrated townships and knowledge city in Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Coimbatore and Madurai with special focus on the lower and middle income groups.

The Government hopes to rein in costs through modern technology and backward integration. The cellular concrete plant at Ennore would be modernised and revived through a joint venture and a new unit for prefabricated building components would be set up in Ennore. Green building concepts would be introduced to save on energy and water costs.

The housing board would also set up several office and commercial complexes in five prominent places in Chennai and Madurai to meet the demand for commercial space, the policy note said. -- OUR BUREAU
