Down Under retreats

Preeti Mehra

The recession notwithstanding, Indians are increasingly being seen as the travellers and spenders in South-East Asia. So, after Hong Kong and Malaysia have got the country's travel trade familiar with their destinations, the Australian Tourism Commission (ATC) has started a scheme that will ensure many more arrivals to their country.

Last week, ATC conferred the first `Aussie Specialist' certificate to an Indian executive travel agent, Rachna Tolat. The `Aussie Specialist' programme, which ATC started last year, has some interesting features. It requires travel agents to undergo an on-line training programme that is designed to train agency staff towards becoming Australia experts and assist in selling the country as a product and destination.

The programme consists of 19 modules over three parts, with each module increasing the agent's knowledge about the variety of destinations in Australia.

ATC has conducted the programme in eight countries in the last one year. In India, 36 agents, with proven track records of selling tours to Australia in India, have undergone the training.

And apart from being a specialist, there are other benefits too. The agent can use the `Aussie Specialist' logo, have access to online updates about the destinations and, of course, the certificate is theirs for the asking.
