Learning is fun

Preeti Mehra

A new curricula for school children seems to be the latest buzz word. Experiments, that promise to make education a fun thing for children, are on way in the Class I-V level. One of them is from Jiva Institute, which celebrated the first anniversary of ICOT, India's Curriculum of Tomorrow, this month.

It's still to be evaluated how effective learning will be through it, but Jiva Institute explains that the new curriculum, based on the recommendations of NCERT, seeks to impart practical education instead of mere bookish learning. Thus, all their textbooks incorporates themes such as learning to learn, character building, environmental protection, kid-friendly economics and practical science.

The books have special layouts with large fonts and cartoon characters have been used to explain the lessons to children. The chapters are also based in story formats and all concepts have been linked to the real world so that kids can make the connections easily.

The textbooks are also linked to online Web pages, so that students could enter the edulink on the site and access the digital animation on the topic.
