Shopping Selling lifestyles Purobi Menon
The young professional of today begins planning for a good home quite early in his/her career. And, it is not just a roof above one's head that is being sought. The well-paid professional today seeks to own a house that can meet the appraising eye. He/she also wants it, at the same time, to be convenient to work out of. This ambition to own smart homes has seen a plethora of lifestyle stores spring up across the country. Kulin Parikh taps into this target segment, with his store called Splendid Homes, in the heart of Delhi's Connaught Place. And, while the store does not offer anything different in terms of items, it does stock good pieces that don't set you back by much. Chance happening Parikh, a design engineer who used to work on medical tools, quite literally saw the light while at an exhibition of plastics in Taiwan. Some lights that he bought at the exhibition and later presented to select hotels, sowed the seeds of a dynamic business enterprise. Also, with consumers travelling widely, the demand for quality goods has grown sharply. But Parikh noticed a substantial mark-up in the prices of foreign items sold in stores back home. So he decided to import directly from the designers in Venice. And the result affordable items that range from as little as Rs 800 right up to a lakh.
Things of beauty
Splendid Homes is the ideal stop for corporate or personal gifting. It has a wide variety of light shades that set of the lighting in a room beautifully, be it a sleek boardroom or the comfort of a lounge. The shop's coloured Murano glass series covers a wide range from the gymnast or the acrobat that capture the graceful motion of their subjects, to the Chinese figurines which possess a passive grace. Besides, there is the painstakingly made glass aviary, which comes with a choice of colourful parrots perched on a branch. Even an elephant holding his trunk with a flourish and a horse in all its regal splendour. Parikh also liases directly with designers for the bigger pieces which are not available off the shelf in the country on account of their delicate nature and forbidding price tags.
