As I read and viewed all that stuff on tsunami I did not cry, but the article `Waves of Compassion' (Life dated January 28) moved me to tears. It is people like J. Radhakrishnan, Collector of Nagapattinam, who make the late P.V. Narasimha Rao's words ring true: "No single generation can destroy 5,000 years of civilisation." Disasters also throw up leaders like the Collector.

Let us hope we continue to be blessed with people like J. Radhakrishnan who are committed and compassionate. People like him need to be highlighted in the media, so that they can become role models for our society, particularly the youth.

I read your report on the excellent work done by Radhakrishnan. It is my request that Radhakrishnan should, later on, take time off and write down a manual on disaster management.

Many years ago, while looking at literature on ammonia storage hazards, I came across an American manual for a very large installation in Miami. While technical designs had been updated, there was a lurking fear that if a plane directly falls on the tanks or if a terrorist bombs them, nearly one lakh people in a 20-km radius will have to be evacuated within an hour. Although the probability of such a disaster was very remote, this manual described how an evacuation must be carried out.

There are many aspects of disaster management, which only Radhakrishnan would have experienced, like the case of the woman who wanted to know about reversal of sterilisation operation.
