Life on the high seas

Raghuvir Srinivasan

You think you're on your own, then you realise you are playing in someone else's playground." This quote from Neal McDonald, champion British Olympic sailor who heads the Ericsson team this year, published in the latest edition of the OVR's official magazine, aptly sums up the environmental aspect of the race.

The oceans are home to some exquisite wildlife, both underwater and above it. The VOR will also bring in images of this wildlife through the official magazine and also the Web site. The feature, titled `Ocean Watch', will throw light on the many species that populate the seas around the world.

There will be special focus on the albatross, a seabird that is a threatened species. The albatross is a voyager bird that can circle the globe without touching land in just two-thirds the record time that man has achieved in sailing around the world. The VOR will lend its support to the Save the Albatross Campaign and publish photographs and videos of this bird in its natural habitat. This is, of course, apart from pictures expected of whales, dolphins, flying fish... there is enough and more for the wildlife enthusiast as well in the Volvo Ocean Race.
