Swimming In The Monsoon Sea

By Shyam Selvadurai
Publishers: Penguin Books
Price: Rs 250

Swimming In The Monsoon Sea explores first love in all its complexity and turmoil. Set in Sri Lanka, during the monsoon season in 1980, the book is about 14-year-old Amrith who faces an uneventful summer in the cheerful well-to-do household in which he is raised by his aunt and uncle. His holiday plans seem `unpromising' until his cousin arrives from Canada. Amrith's ordered life becomes storm-tossed as he falls in love with the boy. Shakespeare's Othello, with its powerful theme of disastrous jealousy, forms the backdrop to the drama in which Amrith finds himself immersed.
