Books Columns - Browser's Corner India, the European Union and the WTO
India, the European Union and the WTO Edited by Rajendra K. Jain and Hartmut Elsenhans Radiant Publishers Price: Rs 750
This volume has 13 essays by Indian and European policy analysts, policymakers and academics who critically examine the role of the European Union (EU) and India in international trade negotiations against the background of liberalisation, globalisation and regionalism. The book evaluates the impact of the World Trade Organisation, which has emerged as the most significant multilateral institution regulating international trade, on developing countries. It examines the convergence and divergence between India and the EU towards critical multilateral trade issues, including agriculture, services and labour standards. This study will be of interest to policymakers and those engaged in the fields of economics, political science, and international relations.
Untouchability in Rural India
Untouchability in Rural India By Ghanshyam Sha, Harsh Mander, et al Sage Publications Price: Rs 295
The book is a systematic documentation of the incidence and extent of the practice of untouchability in contemporary India. It is based on a survey covering 565 villages in 11 states, and reveals that the practice is still prevalent in one form or the other in almost 80 per cent of the villages. The authors describe Dalit efforts to overcome deeply entrenched caste hierarchies and how they assert their right to live with dignity. While the study results suggest that the more blatant and extreme forms of untouchability appear to have declined, discrimination is most prevalent in the religious spheres. According to the authors, the notion of untouchability continues to pervade the public sphere, including a host of state institutions and the interactions that occur within them. This book is recommended for all those interested in social and political rights, particularly students of sociology and social anthropology.
