Wildlife lemur lore
Come February 18 and Animal Planet launches an animal soap opera of two rival gangs of ring tail lemurs in a protected reserve in South East Madagascar. Feminists will be happy to note that each gang is ruled by a dominant female because in ring tail society the girls outrank the boys! The series will track the two gangs and their working for a year, starting with the March mating season, and promises the usual masala of love, hatred, victory, assault, betrayal and vengeance. Infidelity during the mating season, political manoeuvres to take over the leadership of the gang; the tragic and premature birth of a baby lemur, wrong dietary habits during a drought leading to loss of fur, etc are the highlights of this soap. The series is set in the Berenty Reserve in the tropical paradise that is Madagascar and will unravel its rich biodiversity. An Animal Planet press note describes the Berenty Reserve, which nestles between a lake and a river, as an “incredibly diverse forest that has five species of lemurs, of which the red fronted brown lemur and dancing white sifaka are most often seen.” The former resemble “little furry pigs” and the latter “are the ballerinas of Berenty”. Every Monday, 9 p.m.
