Over the years Sesa Goa Ltd, Goa’s leading iron ore mining and export company, has been undertaking environmental protection activities in and around its operating facilities. Sesa Goa’s environmental management and eco-restoration programme dates back to 1957 and its effects can be seen today at its original mine site — Orasso Dongor, which is now a thriving Cashew orchard benefiting the local village community . Another example is the Sanquelim mine, where coconut, banana, arecanut, jackfruit, rubber and a variety of medicinal plants are grown; the mine pit is a demonstration site for pisciculture. The company’s environmental activities include innovative approaches in water and energy conservation and mine-land reclamation. ISO guidelinesThe Environmental Management System (EMS) is based on ISO guidelines. In 1996, the company was certified for ISO 14001 and was the first iron-ore mining company in the world to be thus certified. Further, it was re-certified through BVQI (BVC) for ISO 14001: 2004. Plantation programme
The environmental division plans and implements the plantation programme every year for rehabilitating the mined out areas and waste dumps, based on the nature and terrain of the soil. Native plant species of Western Ghats are germinated in the house nursery with proper seed treatment and blue-green algae. Bio-fertilisers are added in the nursery stage and after a year, plants are planted in the dumps. Plantation is carried out in a suitable pit size of 0.6 cm with good quality soil conditioner. Plants are irrigated for three-four years after plantation; within this time plants are stabilised on the dump and are sustainable.
