If merry-making is directly linked to money-making then the chips are truly down for the Irish. A DPA report wonders whether Ireland is losing its taste for alcohol, thanks to recessionary woes. As many as 400 pubs have closed in the past year, according to the drinks industry. The “serious decline” also coincides with new laws limiting sales hours.

But rather than cheer the decline of what is commonly acknowledged as an unhealthy habit, there is lament for the loss of business and even social costs.

In this country that loves its pint, pubs are widely seen as the place to meet, greet and, of course, make merry.
