Breweries Columns - Gleanings Local industry... hic!
It’s one Gandhian way against another, if one were to look at it from the Mahatma’s point of view in the land of the former colonial masters. The Independent writes of a new trend brewing in the many local shires of the UK – the craft beers. According to the 2009 Camra Good Beer Guide, more than 70 new brewers have opened in the past year, taking the total to an all-time high of 550 since 1945. It records an 11 per cent sales growth for the bitter brewed by the Society of Independent Brewers even as lager sales plunged during 2007. This shows that “drinkers are moving in droves to full-flavoured beers in preference to bland global lagers,” says Roger Protz, editor of The Good Beer Guide. There’s also the concern over leaving carbon footprints. “In particular, more and more consumers are concerned with how beers are made and the ingredients used. They prefer beers made and sold locally rather than driven thousands of miles.” Now, would the Mahatma have smiled at this enthusiastic espousal of ‘Local production and consumption’ or frowned on the abstinence from ‘prohibition’?
