The New Manager - Management

Leader Speak

DR SURINDER KAPOOR, Chairman and MD, Sona Koyo Steering Systems

What I look for in a young manager is high energy levels, and students who are focused on what they want to do. Focus is very important in any fieldl; it is the one thing that all successful people have in common. Also, there is no point in having high energy levels if you can't channel it properly. What happens then is that the energy you bring in is defused and then wasted. And this sense of focus is not restricted to management alone; it's applicable in any field, be it industry-related or academia or anything.

Also, I look for managers who come up with innovative solutions. Youngsters will have to develop the skill, for which you have to put them through a routine of problem solving, and teach them techniques of resolving conflicts. Ideally, this should be taken care of at the university level itself. One of the exercises that I think is important for students to go through is reading and understanding patents. Not only do you get a good idea of the kind of research and development that is taking place, but also you can understand other possible solutions to the same problem by studying these patents.
