The New Manager - Management

Leader Speak

Harsh Pati Singhania, Managing Director, JK Paper Ltd

The next generation global manager needs to think in terms of long-term horizon and vision. Long-term success is built on the foundation of strong character and values.

Acting with integrity and building trustworthiness will lay a strong foundation. Leadership starts with accurate self-awareness of talents, strengths and weaknesses.

Listen to your inner voice and choose a field of work to leverage strengths and talents to make work enjoyable.

A manager must be both a thinker and doer. Achieving results is a must. Self-confidence, courage of conviction to take risks to follow one's dream, at times alone, and bouncing back from setbacks with resilience is essential.

Be a long-term player and don't change jobs for small gains. Seek opportunities to learn. Quick learning, multiple skills and multi-tasking are important.

Seek feedback, be open to criticism and learn from mistakes. Always try to see things from new angles and try to make a difference. Be passionate about your goals and achieve them with focused high energy and enthusiasm. Think globally but act locally. Be a team player and bring out the best in others.

Have a positive attitude and let your enthusiasm rub on others. Keeping a work life balance is critical.

Last but not the least, have a keen sense of humour and learn to laugh heartily.
