The New Manager
-
Work Life An elevating experience Sachin Karnik
It was around a year ago when I was working in a reputed BPO. My office was on the 6th floor of the seven-floor building. It was evening and I, along with my colleague went to the canteen in the other building to have some snacks. I had been in the office for one year and my colleague for five months. While coming back, we were just two of us in the lift. On the lift reaching the fifth floor, we decided to have some fun. We pressed all the floor buttons of the lift, from the ground to the seventh floor. By then the lift had reached the sixth floor. The lift door opened and to our shock, we saw our senior manager (who was seven levels above me) standing in front of us, waiting for the lift with great urgency. We remained stunned and the only thing we could do was to walk away from the embarrassing situation. The lift, expectedly, stopped on each and every floor right from the sixth floor to seven (as we had pressed the seventh floor button as well) and then descended, stopping at each floor till it reached ground. I burst into laughter imagining the dire state of my poor super boss and could not control it for the next few hours, while my colleague was quite tense as she was yet to get confirmed. (Knowing that I was soon going to resign to study further, , the tension never actually got to me.) To add to it, I later on came to know that the boss was in a hurry as he had an appointment. He summoned me to his cabin the next day and asked about the incident. . I, however, got pardoned, the only reason being that I was one of his favourite employees. That incident still brings a smile on my face whenever I recollect it. (The writer is pursuing a degree from K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. He worked in eServe International earlier as a Technology Officer for two years.)
