`Be where challenges are'

Arjun Dev, Head, Flexi staffing division, The Headhunters India

Arjun Dev's career path may seem unconventional for B school grads who take the marketing/finance/consulting job route to success. If opting for an IT job after an MBA (from IIM-B) is unlikely enough, getting into headhunting was unconventional. Says Arjun: "Many still tell me we have hardly any top B-school grads in the recruitment industry, but I feel we ought to be where challenges beckon."

It's not dissatisfaction as an analyst at an IT firm that motivated him to head a business division at The Headhunters. "I was happy with my job at the previous company but I did have plans to start on my own few years down the lane. I was churning ideas, figuring out the finances and other things when I came across this opportunity." After a lot of research and brainstorming with friends and associates, he felt the recruitment industry was booming and beckoning. In 2004, he took the call.

On what B-school taught him ...

Meeting a lot of people from different backgrounds with a wide variety of ideas. Working in teams was learning in itself. We got a holistic view of business — facets like strategy, finance, marketing and HR. We also got to know how the best companies were built and how and why some failed.

On what it ought to have taught ...

How to churn good ideas into successful businesses. I don't know if starting new businesses is a quality that can be taught at B-schools, but I have seen this zest in many of my batch mates and I think B-school can provide good direction. An elective where successful entrepreneurs come and talk about their experiences would go a long way.

A defining moment at the institute ...

It is collective experience that comes back to you every now and then, in bits and pieces. Some of the best things were the people I met, the professors I learnt from, the work deadlines, the sleepless nights, the parties and the best of all, I met my wife there.

Advice for B-school students ...

The market is hot. Take risks at the early stages of your career and don't fear failure.
