The New Manager
-
People Corporate - Management A need for intense passion, deep humility
Satish Kumar, Managing Director, Henkel India Ltd
I think "India's time has come" to take its rightful position on the global stage. That would also mean that tomorrow's young managers are `Global Managers'. These youngsters have to depend as much on their leadership capabilities as on their skills as strategic thinkers. They have to guide a team comprising people from diverse background. Companies today demand good collaborative thinkers who co-operate to solve problems. Managers have to powerfully articulate their ideas, orally and in writing, motivate and guide their people. Level 5 leadership calls for managers with intense passion and deep humility. With very little difference between organisations in terms of their capabilities, resources etc., innovation will be the key differentiation for a successful organisation. Tomorrow's managers have to create an inno-culture in their organisation. It is no longer a case of analysing case studies and building functional expertise, there is an urgent need for Tomorrow managers to be aligned to the complexities of the Global business environment such as managing the implications of WTO, strategising at a global level, managing people and skill diversity across continents, cross-border capital and cultural management. Last of all, they have to play a role in terms of corporate social responsibility to see that the progress the society makes in terms of economic development percolates down to the lowest strata of the society.
