Management Columns - mbas@work `It's manager's job to deliver results'
PREMA MAKKAR
Prema Makkar says she thought an MBA would allow her to achieve a high degree of exposure at a young age, travel a lot and make a tangible impact. It is that very thought that made her pursue an MBA. A 1998-batch management graduate from Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University, Makkar is currently with the CII-promoted non-profit research body, India Development Foundation, as a project manager. On what B-school taught her in terms of qualities for a manager.. In addition to providing me with the basic technical training to be a manager, B-school taught me several important aspects to be an effective one. First, it focused on the aspects of teamwork, discipline, good communication and a high degree of focus on achieving outcomes. This, the school taught primarily through assigning regular group work and presentations, across multiple subjects.Second, it taught me the values of ethics and integrity in business and administration. Professors discussed the importance of these values during classes and case-study analysis. Third, it taught me how to deliver results in a constrained environment. After all, resources are never enough and the environment is not always favourable; but, it is a manager's job to deliver results regardless. On applying what she learnt in B-school.. Although there is nothing like "learning on the job", most MBAs would agree that their B-school years were very useful for success in their careers ahead. In my current role as project manager of a large project, I am able to apply my skills in project management, relationship management and time management. Further, B-school taught me how to multi-task, manage a team and communicate well to achieve the desired results efficiently and effectively.
