The New Manager
-
Management Corporate - People Columns - Leader Speak Maintain an open, honest attitude
Rahul Patwardhan is CEO-India and CEO-Global Application Management, LogicaCMG.
Today's young managers are under pressure to perform and deliver results quickly and continuously. Career growth and achievements are dictated largely by how the work that you deliver brings business benefits to the organisation. A management education is very useful in preparing you with skills in diverse subjects such as finance, operations, planning and strategy. But to be truly successful, young managers need to also cultivate several interpersonal skills, which can be gained only by experience. In the continuous striving for achievement and growth, never forget that you are dependent on your team and on other people for all your successes (or failures). As you go higher, always seek to increasingly empower your team, giving them room to grow too. Try your best to maintain a professional and friendly attitude towards your peers. I would urge you to build into your system a culture of not just acquiring new knowledge and expertise continuously, but also applying that expertise to create innovation in your work. Mix that with a passionate, can-do attitude, and you have an unbeatable combination! Making results happen is often about change, and driving change requires a leader to be willing to challenge current ways of working and attitudes. Leaders need to leverage the value of constructive conflict, to push the envelope and make change and growth happen. Always maintain an open, honest attitude, even if it sometimes seems difficult. Welcome the idea of people disagreeing with you, because that will encourage new ideas and solutions to flow from other people. In today's globalised world, always try and sensitise yourself to different cultures. Absorb the best practices from each country and its culture. This will be of great help in your career. And finally, be aware that we all have inherent leadership traits - we only need to realise our own potential and make it a conscious habit to nurture and develop them.
