How they dit it

Nisha Surendran, an engineering graduate, secured 99.8 percentile in CAT 2005 and 99.4 percentile in XAT. She got calls from IIM-B and IIM-K.

She believes that Indian IT companies, especially those in the big league, are leveraging management skills effectively.

She says though home-grown skills definitely make a good manager, a formal business education will give one the winning edge.

On why an MBA...

I thought that an MBA, apart from giving me a good grounding in management, will also open up a lot of career avenuesto be explored in future as and when I discover newer interests. After my MBA, Iwant to get into management consulting and get some international exposure.

On winning strategy...

Just focus and hard work. I decide what my goals are, find out what it takes to achieve them, and work very hard. I am not exceptionally intelligent or brilliant, but I know that I can work very hard and stay focussed and that by itself will help me get where I want.

On her favourite management thought... .

Excellent people skills are absolutely essential to being a good manager. I found that lessons I picked up from Dale Carnegie's books make a lot of practical difference to working more effectively with people and getting things done.

On where she imbibes ideas from...

I imbibe ideas from the newspapers, books and magazines I read. I also take in a lot from the Internet. However, anidea that strikes a chord, regardless of it being from a wrapping paper or a kid , will always be internalised.
