For a humane touch

Prachi Jain

Prachi Jain, who passed out from MDI-Gurgaon in 2000, is Assistant Manager at TechSpan India. She believes that B-schools must develop the questioning streak in students.

On what made her pursue MBA...

After graduating from St. Stephen's college in Mathematics, I wanted to combine my analytical skills with business knowledge. Getting to know the various aspects of business and industry exposure are important criteria for working in any business environment. So I wanted to pursue an MBA immediately after my graduation.

On what B-school taught her...

B-school taught me to look at the same world from a different angle. It helps one not just view any incidents/situations very rationally without getting emotional about it, but also conditions you to maintain a humane approach. Another extremely important learning from the B-school was teamwork and interpersonal skills. Coming from a very individualistic environment of Delhi University, it was quite a change to be working in teams and doing projects where your success is dependent on someone other than yourself.

You learn the importance of group dynamics. The interpersonal skills prepare you for a managerial role where you need to make people work for you and on your ideas. Other important learnings are: how to be competitive, honing of your presentation skills, broadening your horizons and thinking big.

On what B-schools must teach...

As an old saying goes, intelligent people solve the problems, genius identifies them, maybe the one thing that a B-school can add to its curriculum is to develop a questioning streak in students. It should push its students to constantly question established theories and not rest till they find their answers. It ought to teach how to think about complex business and management problems. It should allow people to be innovative and radical!
