The New Manager
-
Management Corporate - People Columns - Leader Speak `Understand technology'
Sushma Berlia, President, Apeejay Stya Group.
In the changing business environment, especially when the shift is towards the knowledge era, a business manager must be flexible to the environment. The manager must be able to upgrade himself technologically and also understand how technology is impacting not just his industry or field of work but the world. He must also keep upgrading the skills in whatever functional area of the organisation he handles. In order to gear himself up, he may go back to college or do a short-term course. He must also be good at multi-tasking and should be able to do not just one activity but be able to execute several activities at the same time. He must also have the competence to complete the tasks that he may have envisaged, both at the personal level and also at the organisational level. Although we all call ourselves professionals, we may not be actually so. A manager must be professional in a manner that he must be able to achieve a target from the organisational point of view. Another important quality for a manager is ethics, especially in the present day work environment. A manager with ethics is able to garner better shareholding value, better relationship with employees and suppliers. Yet another quality that a manager must have is ability to handle people and form teams. Often team building is important, sometimes within the organisation and sometimes with other organisations. A manager who is able to build an effective team is a successful manager. Persistence and strength to face adversity is equally important for a manager. A successful manager is one who has a never-say-die attitude. A manager must also have emotional intelligence and an entrepreneurial approach. All these qualities make up for a successful manager in the present day work environment.
