Management Columns - Leader Speak Sense of ownership key to success
Vivek Malhotra, Director (Relationship Business), Lenovo (India) Pvt Ltd.
In today's global market, the dynamics are constantly shifting and there is an increasing demand for professionals at all levels to be good managers. Being a good manager is a continuous learning process and there are many qualities that a person must practice on a regular basis. These are a few key tenets that distinguish a good manager: Ownership: Good managers demonstrate a keen sense of ownership over whatever they are working on. This elevates them from being mere paid employees to people who are truly invested in the success of the project. This `entrepreneurial spirit' lets a good manager approach his work with greater passion and energy and makes a significant difference to the results. Because good managers feel a tremendous sense of ownership, they do not consider any task too trivial, quibble about petty matters or get involved in minor ego issues that are detrimental to the project. They are focused on results and do not mind going the extra mile to achieve them. Good managers also know how to inculcate this sense of ownership among their people. Empowerment: A good manager must know how to empower his people. The temptation to control everything and retain all decision-making power can be strong. However, a manager is only as effective as his team and empowering team members with the ability to take decisions on their own is crucial to the success of a team. Good managers are able to teach others in the team to develop sound judgment so that they are able to commit to decisions when the need arises. They also cultivate a culture of knowledge sharing so that team members are equipped with all the necessary information. They encourage others to take risks and back them up on their decisions. Sensitivity: A manager's job is often stressful. In high pressure situations, there may be a temptation to be impatient or insensitive with other people. Good managers understand the importance of sensitivity and practice it without discrimination. Building good relationships is key to being a successful leader and this is only possible if one displays consistent sensitivity and good behaviour.
