Management Columns - Leader Speak Empires are built first in the mind!
Sandeep Manudhane, Chairman, PT Education
Leadership is not a 9-to-5 job! It is a dream to be lived, each moment of the day. And that's what makes it very difficult, very special, and not everyone's cup of tea. Brutal as this may sound, this comes as a package deal - the bouquets come with the chains, take it or leave it! It is quite true that empires are built first in the mind. Exceptional leaders can see in 3-D in their minds what they expect to see in reality. What a good leader does is to effectively perform a few conversion exercises. These exercises can be either one or a multiple of the ones mentioned below: Changes the tone of chance to choice Every chance is like a charged ion that is floating around all the time. Before it floats out and into the dustbin of eternity, a leader must have the gumption to identify, capture and allow this chance idea to metamorphose into a well-defined choice. This choice has the ability to promote itself into a vision. Creates the visible from the invisible It is the capacity to convert or translate vision into reality that is the first step. A mere idea must be shaped and formed into coherent bits that are then linked by processes and operational details. Only then shall an invisible gem be visible to all for applause! Converts inconveniences into opportunities Every vision that gets personified affects attitude. It is the vibrancy of optimism that must be opted for if it has to be nurtured. The negative energy of pessimism will only grant it flaccid shades of grey until it withers and dies. Only optimism has the magic bricks that make every inconvenience turn into an opportunity. Rearranges possibilities until they become obvious Neither visions nor plans are born perfect. Constant scrubbing and polishing keeps them shining and new! Possibilities, unlike a conventional jigsaw, can rearrange itself in more than one way to reflect success. This is a good mantra to remember. It is thus imperative to remember that big thinking precedes achievement always! Remember, empires are built first in the mind! - Sandeep Manudhane, CMD, PT Education
