The New Manager
-
Management Columns - Leader Speak Respond to change, positively
Muralidhar Rao, COO & President, NIS Sparta
The focus of many managers in the past has been to simply concentrate on people management, with very little emphasis on the manager being a key link in the business performance chain. To achieve this, a manager needs to able to work in conjunction with a team, respond to change in a timely and positively effective manner, motivate employees so as to achieve higher levels of productivity, and take on the roles and responsibilities as a leader. A single manager rarely possesses the skill sets that a management team might have. Each member of the team has their own area of expertise and help in viewing from different perspectives the overall direction and goals of the organisation. The role of a successful manager is to positively influence his/her team by employing methods that would yield the best possible results. The rapport within the team is very important and can add further value beyond the individual talents and skills of each employee. Teams whose members relate well to one another contribute significantlyto the overall fulfillment of their objectives. It is and always has been the role of managers to make sure that their team works as a unified entity. Globalisation has enforced changes in most organisations, leading to the culmination of another area of responsibility for the business manager. Change Management has reached a certain level where organisations have no option but to embrace this change in a buoyant manner. This is where the manager steps in so as to establish a clear vision for the change management process and paint a picture of where the organisation will end up and the anticipated outcomes.
