Management Columns - Leader Speak Encourage positive, creative thinking
Mr H.M. Bharuka, Managing Director, Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd.
In a world as diverse and dynamic as ours leadership and a natural managerial skill is a must to ensure progress and success in any field of business. A decade ago, running an organisation was the key mandate of any leader or business manager, but today it is much more than that. A successful business manager has to understand, manage and fulfil the expectations of all his stakeholders, including the consumer. Today, a business manager has to design his business than just controlling it, must understand the paradigm shift from yesterday's autocratic bureaucracy to today's corporate governance. In the present day environment, the leader should be able to create leaders at all levels of operations and not control the reins all by himself. To be successful today, one must be able to influence decisions and become a more equal partner in strategy formulation. Equip oneself with the critical skills needed to manage crisis and change in new environments. One must also be able to encourage positive and creative thinking. Identify goals yet untapped, yet not thought of and make it everyone's mission, vision and strive to get the entire team moving in that direction. As a good leader one should be able to develop a knack for understanding constructive discontent, which is not necessarily criticism,to grab an opportunity. He or she should be able to always offer a different way of doing something. Another trait most important is to give practical ideas, not flights of fantasies. Synthesis and bonding needs to be at the very core of one's managerial strategy, only then one could be successful. Mr H.M. Bharuka, Managing Director, Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd.
