`Create lasting value'

RAVI SHANKAR, Director, Natural Search

On being a leader

A good leader in today's organisation is one who understands clever people and believes that work is more about creating something which is of lasting value. They must generate autonomy and creative opportunities in their organisation.

On what would make an effective and efficient manager in the current business scenario

Today's organisation's competitive advantage lies in the ability to create an organisation built around talent and knowledge and not merely around cost-efficiency. In order to be successful a manager in the current business scenario must contribute towards creating an environment which sustains and grows that talent and knowledge. Developing knowledge is not merely confined to R&D laboratories or think tanks but can happen anywhere in the organisation and can be contributed even by the youngest employee who is totally new to the business.

The role of a young manager in today's scenario

Initiating right leadership practices, employee engagement and workforce optimisation. For instance, a leadership practice that needs to be put in is that of collaboration with subordinates and inviting inputs from them. It is important. Looking at employee engagement and work-life balance is very important and it is essential that young managers in their overenthusiasm to deliver results overlook the importance of work-life balance.

On what next generation managers need to know

Responsibility towards their immediate subordinates and the society around them. In any organisation, people are the assets, their skills, the capital and their mindset, the driver. A good manager needs to recognise that and nurture the skills of his people, provide them a healthy and competitive work environment and drive them to achieve their best. Managers also need to be aware of corporate social responsibility — nobody can operate in isolation and anything that we succeed in achieving is in the space that society provides us. All of us have the responsibility of giving back to society in some measure, in some manner that we think fit.
