People Columns - Leader Speak `Determination is the key to success'
Vikram Shah
The prescription for success starts with determination. In today's competitive world, managers face numerous bottlenecks starting with meeting their targets to building successful teams to retaining employees, and so on. Since it is a race against time, one has to accomplish all these and much more within a limited time. It is this pressure that many young, budding mangers find difficult to deal with. We need to understand that it is not only pivotal to set objectives and goals, but it is of the essence to see them through. Determination to see things through to completion is indispensable to success. As it is said, "Action speaks louder than words." It is determination which helps an individual or organisation accomplish its objectives. In today's competitive scenario where a single slip-up or deferral could lead to losses, young managers have to take up their tasks in a disciplined manner. This calls for determination; determination to be disciplined, consistent and see things through till the end. While we may not inherit good character qualities all the time , what we can do is to rigorously practise good qualities and make them a habit, and an integral part of one's personality. It is important for young budding managers to realise that "Not one of the leadership qualities is inborn, but all are easily grasped." One has to work on his or her strengths and their weakness, which ultimately makes a great leader or a leader great. That is a matter of choice rather than birth.
