The New Manager - Education
IIM-K launches new courses

Sankar Radhakrishnan

About six years ago, the Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIM-K) teamed up with HughesNet Global Education (HNGE) to offer an executive management education programme (eMEP) using a satellite-based interactive distance-learning platform. Encouraged by the response to the eMEP programme, which is into its seventh year, IIM-K is now launching four function-specific executive education programmes that use HNGE's distance learning technology to reach out to students across the country.

The experience of offering executive education programmes using a satellite-based interactive platform has been quite satisfying, says K. Purani, Chairman, IDL, IIM-K. "What was launched as an experiment has now grown to a programme that is recognised by both learners and employers," he says, adding that over 1,000 executives have benefited from this mode of education.

The four new programmes being launched are in finance, strategic management, marketing and operations management. All four programmes are of 225 hours duration and include a 36-hour on-campus component. The new courses are designed to help participants perform their managerial functions in a more scientific manner, he adds.

The eMEP programme has made a considerable difference to participants and has thrown up a demand for function-specific advanced education programmes, says Purani. "The new programmes are being offered keeping these requirements of working executives in mind," he adds.

With the four new courses being launched this year and its eMEP, IIM-K will have a complete bouquet of management programmes, he points out. "The challenge would be to integrate these programmes to offer an executive MBA-level programme," he adds.

Students can attend classes for the four new courses at any of HNGE's 300 learning centres or classrooms in 91 cities across the country. While the executive education programmes in finance and strategic management are set to begin in a few weeks, the admission schedule for the programmes in marketing and operations management will be announced soon.

The courses are open to graduates with over five years of work experience. The fee for the finance and strategic management courses is Rs 1,01,250 and each batch will have between 75 and 120 students, Purani adds.
