Breaking away from stereotypical thinking is both a challenge and an opportunity that managers face today. If the organisation and the team only have a myopic focus on interim success, they are destined to fall short in the longer term. It is imperative for organisations to include innovation as an integral part of their organisational set-up. ‘Innovate or perish’ should be the driving theme and it is essential for a manager, to extend this theme throughout the organisation. A significant start to fostering the culture of innovation is to have a clear and lofty vision that will bring about growth and greatness. As the saying goes: ‘Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become.’ This vision should not be a utopian dream. Guided by this vision, one should follow through by executing tasks fearlessly. Fearlessness and the ability to face crisis are of essence in seeing things through to success. Finally, none of this is real without people. Successful managers have to build a culture of innovation in their teams. People cannot always be managed in black and white and one has to manage in various shades of grey in order to bring out the best from the team. It is heartening to note that the IT industry in India is beginning to see many young, innovative and entrepreneurial product companies; I believe that the journey of these companies will categorically set the stage for innovation in IT in India.
