‘Good leaders build motivated teams’

Vivek Talwar, Managing Director, Nitco Tiles Ltd

Leadership is the ability to influence a team to a positive course of action resulting in favourable outcomes.

Good leaders strive to build motivated teams.

A good leader must have a strong vision and the ability to roll back the future to the present.

He should be able to create a compelling vision of the future and provide inspiration with his imagination.

In today’s turbulent times, the ability to deal with ambiguity and remain on top of changes in the business environment is an important ingredient of good leadership.

Many a time, speed and the ability to adapt and move quickly helps in gaining competitive advantage.

Qualities such as empathy and walking the talk help leaders in improving their emotional quotient with their team members.

This, in turn, leads to candour and encourages the building of a better rapport amongst team members.

It also helps the team unify for a cause.

Above all, good leaders have strong value systems and drive business on the fundamentals of “value driven business”.

Strong leaders possess humility and honesty. These qualities help them win over their teams and guide them through the vagaries of business.

The manner, style and intermix of the above qualities would be different for different leaders.

A leader must have the ability to take bold strokes when the situation demands it and the ability to work under conflicting demands and pressure.

All this practised consciously helps a person establish his or her own effective leadership style. The definition of a great leader is one who is able to make his team members find their own greatness.
