The New Manager
-
People Corporate - Management Columns - Leader Speak Balance goals with imperatives
Arjun Ranga, Managing Partner, N. Ranga Rao & Sons.
In today’s scenario where change is the only constant, an effective manager is one who can strike the right balance between long-term goals and short-term imperatives. He should also have the ability to achieve optimum results even from scarce resources. He should be able to both ideate and implement. Importantly, he should have networking abilities as the days of hierarchical organisations are on the wane. A leader is one who can take you where you have never been before and make you see things in a way you have never seen before. He should be able to make you bite into the overall organisational goals. He is one who can clearly enunciate what is expected of you and who can create an environment where human strengths are compounded and weaknesses made irrelevant. A leader is one who gets things done without telling people what to do. The role of a young manager is not only to strive to ensure cutting edge technology and global best practices in his organisation, but also to ensure that growth has a human face. Young managers should strive to be good corporate citizens and champion good corporate governance. The next generation managers will be exposed to many more technological tools. But they need to know that human beings are more important than technology. They will be exposed to much more data; they also need to hone their insight. Technology can lull you into a false sense of omnipotence; they need to learn that there is no substitute for getting your elbows dirty, especially in a country like ours. Lastly, they need to know that great managers know how to strike the right balance between the right and left brain. — Arjun Ranga, Managing Partner, N. Ranga Rao & Sons.
