The New Manager
-
People Corporate - Management Columns - Leader Speak Realising their true potential A leader’s real job is to rally people towards a better future. His or her actions should guide employees to their core strengths, show them the goals to be achieved and the action to be taken. When a leader places confidence in his people and trains them for success, they will respond by performing at levels higher than what is expected of them. I started my career as a management trainee at Swastik Foils, a unit of the erstwhile Saw Pipes Ltd (now Jindal Saw Ltd). My involvement in pioneering the production of thin gauge steel (0.015 mm thinness), unheard of at that time, helped turn the sick unit into a profitable venture. I shifted to Saw Pipes Ltd in 1997 and was within a few years made Managing Director of the company which has a manpower of 2,000 employees. This experience paved my path to becoming a natural leader. Leaders should execute course corrections in response to developments. They must be evangelists for changing the system — not for preserving it. — Sminu Jindal, Managing Director, Jindal Saw Ltd and Founder, Svayam (an initiative of the Sminu Jindal Charitable Trust).
