Leaders should possess clarity of vision

Sanjeev Mohanty, Managing Director, Benetton India

What qualities make a great leader?

Clarity of vision

Ability to catalyse innovation

Strategic competence with the ability to drive excellence in execution

Speed of decision-making

Talent acquisition, management and retention

An incident from your life, or, what you observed, which you think was great leadership?

When I was 10 years old, I had managed to convince boys mostly older than me in my colony to clear up an unused piece of land with heavy shrubs and being used as a garbage dump to develop this into a very good and clean cricket ground. It needed a lot of convincing between rival groups, managing egos, having everyone to buy into the idea of a dirty piece of land being developed into a beautiful playground without any help from the parents. That was something great for me personally.

Two or three ways in which you think young managers can develop leadership skills? Recognise your strengths and build on them

Reinforce your self-belief and hone your skills by taking up the toughest assignments

Benchmark yourself with the best leaders; there are always great things to learn from Jack Welch, Steve Jobs, Mahatma Gandhi, etc. Read biographies of great leaders....

Who is your leadership ideal in the corporate world - India or global?

Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla - In India

Steve Jobs - Global

Sanjeev Mohanty, Managing Director, Benetton India Pvt. Ltd
