HBS executive education programme: Real estate in spotlight

Our Bureau

Harvard Business School has announced a new executive education programme to be held in June this year. A collaborative initiative involving Harvard Business School (HBS) and the HBS India Research Centre, the four-day South Asia Real Estate Seminar will be held in Hyderabad from June 17.

Designed for senior executives in the real estate industry, the programme aims to connect participants with HBS faculty familiar with current industry research. The programme is for CEOs and executives with real estate experience, including real estate owners, principals, investors, private real estate developers, bank officers and other industry service advisors, says a HBS press note.

The programme will use HBS’ case study method to “provide senior leaders with fresh insights and cutting-edge tools to take full advantage of new opportunities in the fast-growing real estate industry,” states the press note. Through case studies from across the world, interactive classroom exercises and small group discussions, the course will explore subjects such as land valuation, development planning and finance, joint ventures, leadership and talent development and strategy and competitive advantage. According to John Macomber, HBS Lecturer and one of the programme’s faculty members, “Like so many aspects of the South Asian economy, real estate is experiencing rapid growth in a region that is fast becoming a major player in the global finance and investment marketplace.” The programme will help participants explore opportunities and obstacles for long-term success as this sector matures.

“This seminar will help South Asia’s top real estate leaders chart a course that can both build world-class organisations and attract significant global capital in the future,” says Rakesh Khurana, Associate Professor of Business Administration, HBS, and another of the programme’s faculty members. Besides Khurana and Macomber, the faculty for the course includes Arthur I. Segel, Professor of Management Practice, HBS, and Nori Gerardo Lietz, of Partners Group, a global alternative asset management firm. Noel Tata, Managing Director of Trent, will speak on the importance of real estate in a special session titled ‘Property as the Foundation for Growth of Indian Multinationals,’ the press note adds.

According to the HBS note, the seminar will be held at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre and the last date for applications is May 19. More information on the programme can be obtained from the Web site www.exed.hbs.edu/programs/rei/, the note adds. The South Asia Real Estate seminar is the latest of HBS’ executive programmes in India. Earlier this year, it had conducted an executive education programme on ‘Building a Global Enterprise in India’.
