SHRM launches student network in India

Tunia Cherian

With much of the study at the professional level focussed on the student’s own efforts and his or her familiarity with the subject and the most recent developments in it, it is important that adequate resource materials are available to the student.

SHRM India (Strategic HR Management India Pvt Ltd) has opened just such an avenue for students with its first Student Network in the country, which would open up a world of information for the serious HR student.

According to Nina Woodard, Executive Director, SHRM, the idea behind the initiative was that the students, as SHRM Members, would be able to access the thousands of pages of information on the SHRM Web site ( www.shrm.org), including all ‘Tool Kits’, white papers and research findings.

She told The New Manager, that as members, the students would be able to reach out to professional members around the world and access information about global HR trends and activities. By virtue of their membership in the network, SHRM India would work with the students on various initiatives.

“Since this is the first network in India, we are building the kinds of sharing and events that will be most useful to the new student members. To start with, the institute has registered a batch of students from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences,” she said.

According to Woodard, SHRM hoped to bring more student networks into the SHRM Membership family.

“We are having discussions with several student groups at the Delhi School of Economics, SIES, ITM and others,” she said.

Full-time students enrolled in an HR programme and who have a faculty advisor at their University/College would be eligible to register with SHRM.

The students would have to fill out the membership application, pay $35 for membership and supply details of their educational programme.

Strategic Human Resource Management India (SHRM India) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), and is devoted to supporting the professional and advancing the profession of human resource management in India.
