Lead from the front

Rajiv Agarwal, Chief Operating Officer and Director, The MobileStore

What qualities make a great leader?

Someone who can motivate, has an inspiring personality, and is a person of character. A leader should be able to lead from the front and provide the team vision and the tools to perform. By giving the team the room and space to make mistakes, he or she should stimulate it to big steps.

Leaders provide vision and direction; great leaders drive the organisation by communicating their vision to their teams so that the latter can implement company strategies accordingly.

Leaders fail when they accept mediocre results or fail to set challenging standards. Holding the fort through such challenges sets a good example for team members to follow. This motivates the team to do better.

Leaders should be result-oriented and communicate their goals to their team members. When there is no clear focus, team members cannot work together to maximise the organisation’s effectiveness. Teams tend to emulate their leaders and act according to what they perceive to be their team leaders’ priorities, so communication of the desired result is important.

Two or three ways in which you think young managers can develop leadership skills?

We believe in giving our people larger roles and responsibilities.

We invest our time and resources today in developing our talent pool so that we have better leaders for the future.

Managers should be allowed to make decisions and be given responsibilities, enabling them to grow and succeed. One should act as a mentor to young managers – guiding, nurturing and helping them to be successful. One must make sure they know their role in your vision for the company.
