Human Resources Corporate - Management Columns - Leader Speak Leaders recognise and nurture talented workers
Nitin Shah, Chairman and Managing Director, Allied Digital Services What qualities make a great leader? A great leader is one who leads from the front and participates with the team. He or she should be a role model and should be able to align mindsets, encourage teams to imbibe the core values and harmonise their teams towards the set goals. The abilities of a true leader are tested when he or she has to take bold decisions in adherence with the core values of the organisation. Leaders are quick to identify the spark in people, who they nurture to create a winning team. They are concerned about the morale of their team and develop and mould them through continuous motivation. Ways in which young managers can develop leadership skills. Young managers should believe in themselves, their teams and the company they work in. They should have the drive to run their business, and be self-motivated and result-oriented. They should also be open to adapting to new ideologies.Young managers should understand that they can create value only by working in a team in a collaborative environment. One should also think innovatively in order to achieve greater efficiency. Who is your leadership ideal in the corporate world - India or global? My leadership ideal is Jack Welch, Ex-Chairman & Managing Director of General Electric Company. During privatisation, when America got caught in the issue of the old and new economy, Welch brought about a paradigm shift in the country’s management culture, moving from the command and control approach to a more participative style. He broke hierarchy and sowed the seeds of an open culture that he called ‘boundaryless culture.’ — Nitin Shah, Chairman and Managing Director, Allied Digital Services
