Univ of Hyderabad course in hospital management

G. Naga Sridhar

With the recent growth in the healthcare industry, the prospects for graduates in healthcare and hospital management are looking up and many institutes such as the University of Hyderabad (UoH) are now wooing students with offers of world-class curriculum.

“India is poised to become a global hub for healthcare services. Some of the recent Government initiatives focus on improving healthcare access, boosting private sector participation in the sector and upgrading technology and managerial skills to manage the complex healthcare environment. It is in this context that we designed our programme,” says V. Venkata Ramana, Dean, School of Management Studies, UoH.

He told The New Manager that the School of Management Studies was offering a two-year MBA (full-time) programme in Health Care and Hospital Management from the year 2008-09.

“The programme fulfils the specific needs of middle-level administrators in hospitals or healthcare and related sectors. It will provide professional qualification and insights into managerial functions for those graduates who wish to take up healthcare and hospital management as a professional career. It will also be of immediate benefit to professionals in this sector,” said Ramana.

“While many institutes are offering MBAs in some areas of hospital administration, we see a need for comprehensive training in all aspects of hospital management,” he says.

The programme aims to achieve excellence in the areas of healthcare and hospital management education, research, training and consultancy on par with international benchmarks and standards.

This programme and the pedagogical techniques are designed to develop effective communication, analytical and problem-solving skills in the participants and empower them to meet the challenges facing the health services organisations.

The course curriculum would be developed with the active collaboration and involvement of senior healthcare and hospital management policy makers, administrators and professionals to provide the students with the latest information and practical orientation in the field of healthcare and hospital management.

Initially, the course would be offered to 20 students with key inputs from the faculty of the school and other visiting faculty with supplementary inputs from industry professionals.

The programme would be run in active association and cooperation with the School of Medical Sciences so that the necessary expertise can be drawn from the school, he added.

The fee for the two-year programme would be Rs.1.2 lakh.
