Essential leadership qualities

As the CXO, you are perhaps in a hurry-mode all the time. “Little hurries to get to work on time (or early), big hurries to beat your sales target, medium-size hurries to get everyone signed on to your goals,” writes Umesh Ramakrishnan in There’s No Elevator to the Top ( www.penguin.com). He reminds, however, that patience is an important quality that CEOs need to have and cultivate.

“You have to realise that you are where you are because you’re moving at a pace that’s much faster — if you are truly a leader, you’re probably twenty paces ahead of everybody else. But you need to learn how to wait for those to catch up with you,” reads a CEO-quote cited in the book.

Another essential leadership quality is humility. Knowing when you don’t know is just as important as having a good brain, says Ramakrishnan.

Moms as leaders

Discover your leadership style, exhorts Jamie Woolf in Mom-in-Chief: How wisdom from the workplace can save your family from chaos ( www.josseybass.com).

“Every mom, like every business leader, has her own personal style that showcases her strengths and inspires those around her. I call these styles Mom Modes, the skills and strategies that build relationships, encourage individuality, and promot e success.” The three basic modes, according to Woolf, are the Achiever, Connector, and Liberator; and, thankfully, we each operate from all the modes.

At home, the Achiever mom raises expectations and encourages children to reach higher goals, even as she busily fills her children’s schedules with music lessons, sports teams, and language classes.

Connectors’ emphasis is on building strong bonds that make children feel valued, safe, and trusted, informs Woolf. And those in the third mode, as Liberators, derive satisfaction from letting people make their own choices.
