Only 50 per cent of the 2,000 bags of turmeric that arrived in Erode markets was sold on Wednesday.

“Due to the polling on Thursday, many turmeric farmers did not visit the markets and only a few farmers brought their produce. Traders purchased only 980 bags as only medium quality arrived for sale. Many farmers expected higher price. Local traders are getting reasonable demand from North India and are buying only to meet their requirements,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

Due to poor arrivals, the price increased in Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard by ₹300.At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association, the finger variety was sold at ₹5,025-7,555 a quintal; the root variety ₹4,839-7,095.

The finger variety of Salem Hybrid fetched ₹6,277-7,695 and the root variety ₹5,909-7,314. Of the 923 bags that arrived, only 217 were sold.

At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger variety was sold at ₹6,419-7,511; the root variety ₹6,119-7,271. Of the 489 bags put up for sale, 474 were traded.

At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety quoted ₹6,493-7,569 and the root variety ₹6,700-7,131. Of the 75 bags on offer, 65 were sold.

At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety fetched ₹5,896-7,462; the root variety ₹5,776-7,119. All the 109 bags found takers.
