Coconut oil prices zoomed to a new high of ₹125/kg in Kerala and Tamil Nadu markets this week. Traders attribute low arrivals of copra for the price surge. Copra is ruling at ₹90/kg in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Bharat N Khona, former Board Member, Cochin Oil Merchants Association, said that shortage of copra has impacted prices of coconut oil, which is expected to continue over the short term. Even though the season has commenced in Kerala, the arrival of coconuts has not picked up from any of the major producing centres. Thalath Mahmood, Director of the association, said that the price rise may force consumers to shift to other cheaper oils for meeting their domestic requirements. The market is pinning its hopes on the season’s start in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka by the end of this month. V Sajeev Kumar
