Because of poor production of cotton, the season concluded earlier than usual in the district.

“Erode district is noted for its cotton production and the cotton harvest is conducted from July to September. But this year due to decline in the cultivable area of cotton, the production was affected, so the regular weekly auction sale of cotton in the Bhoodapady Regulated Market committee (RMC) concluded on Wednesday. This is 15 to 20 days in advance,” said RMC officials.

Though the exact arrival and sale of cotton is not available, RMC officials said this year the arrival decreased by 30 per cent due to climatic conditions. But now many farmers have sown the cotton in their fifteen thousand acres of land and it is expected that fresh cotton crop may be harvested in the first week of January and be taken for sale to the RMC.

In the Bhoodapady RMC on Wednesday, only 160 quintals (426 bags) of cotton arrived for sale. The traders from Coimbatore, Annur, Rajapalayam, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Theni districts quoted a decreased price. The farmers expected an increased price due to poor arrival.

Bt Cotton fetched ₹4,100 to ₹4,700 a quintal. In Anthiyur RMC poor quantity cotton arrived for sale and fetched a decreased price of ₹4,000 to ₹4,500 a quintal. The cotton grower farmers said this year they incurred huge loss due to non-receipt of feasible price for their cotton. They expected that in January (second season), they may get more than ₹6,000 a quintal of cotton.
