Crude oil futures rose 0.32 per cent to Rs 5,994 per barrel today as speculators created fresh positions amid a firm trend in Asia.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange, crude oil for delivery in August traded higher by Rs 19 or 0.32 per cent to Rs 5,994 per barrel with a business turnover of 1,427 lots.

Similarly, the oil for delivery in September also moved up by Rs 14 or 0.23 per cent to Rs 5,984 per barrel with a business volume of 78 lots.

Analysts attributed the rise in crude oil futures to a firm trend in Asian trade today as dealers monitor sustained US air strikes on extremist militants in Iraq who are threatening the crude-rich Kurdish region.

Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery rose 32 cents at $97.97 a barrel, while Brent crude for September delivery climbed 23 cents to $105.25 in mid-morning trade at the New York Mercantile Exchange.
