To cool down prices and ensure the availability of chana (chickpea) during the festival season, the government has decided to release it through National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Ltd (NCDEX).
The meeting of Inter-Ministerial Committee on prices held here on Friday also considered selling subsidised pulses through the outlets of Khadi and Village Industries Corporation (KVIC), according to an official release.
Last week, the committee had decided to use the postal network for distribution of pulses.
The committee was informed that the Department of Consumer Affairs was working on the modalities with the Department of Post to start the distribution of pulses through its network at the earliest.
Last month, the Union Cabinet had raised the buffer stock limit to 20 lakh tonnes to be built through domestic procurement and imports of 10 lakh tonnes each at a cost of Rs 18,500 crore to check the price rise and availability of pulses.
At present, subsidised pulses are being distributed through Kendriya Bhandar, Safal and National Cooperative Consumers Federation in Delhi NCR, as also in some other metros.
