Spot prices of the hybrid finger turmeric increased in Erode markets following enquiries from North India.

“On Wednesday, all the 200-and-odd bags of hybrid finger were purchased by a trader quoting higher prices. But other varieties remained flat,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

Many upcountry traders wanted fine and superfine varieties of turmeric for exporting them to other countries. But now, only medium variety arrives for sale. Many growers said that they have ample stock of the fine variety but are waiting for prices to rise. On Wednesday, 3,800 bags arrived and of this 60 per cent was sold.

At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹4,219-6,456; the the root variety ₹4,056-6,446 a quintal.

Salem Hybrid: The finger turmeric fetched ₹5,691-7,609; the root variety ₹5,491-6,534. Of the 873 bags that arrived, only 112 were sold.

At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric quoted ₹5,539-6,585; the root variety ₹5,489-6,327. Of the 984 bags on sale, 927 were traded.

At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric fetched ₹5,869-6,586 and the root variety ₹5,574-6,347. All the 937 bags found takers.

At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,567-6,439 and the root variety ₹5,480-6,287. All the 351 bags were sold.
